Mitchell Hayes

Mitchell Hayes is an award-winning art director and freelance designer specializing in publication design. Hayes studied at Monserrat College of Art and taught magazine design at Boston University College of Communication.

After working for 20-years as an art director for local and national publications, Mitchell yearned to get back into the studio. In 2003 he studied monotype print making at the Worcester Museum of Art and utilizing that discipline, eventually developed his special technique of combining leaves and other organic material into the printing process. He gathers most of his materials himself, either hand picking them in the woods and fields around his studio, or if need be, purchasing them from a florist.

"I have always loved the graphic potential of leaves, and flowers. The medium of mono printing provides me with the fluidity I seek as I attempt to translate their form and structure into a two dimensional form. It's all about the layering aspects in printmaking and the relief that organic materials leave behind. I find printmaking to be a craft, very tactile and hands-on. It becomes a building process and that's what I like".
Hayes' work incorporates several forms of print making; mono print, etching, woodcut and silkscreen. "I have been inspired by the late Michael Mazur who combined various forms of print making into a final composition, it is from his work in particular, I realized the results are endless."

Recently Hayes has been working with encaustic paint (A method of painting using wax infused oil paint). "The encaustic process evolved into a flawless partner as I combined it with organic material, mono prints and woodcuts."

Mitchell's artwork has been featured at:

All work is on acid-free kitakata paper. This handmade Japanese paper has a delicate and subtle laid pattern in a natural color.

Chine-collé is a special technique in printmaking in which the image is transferred to a surface that is bonded to a heavier support in the printing process. One purpose is to allow the printmaker to print on a much more delicate surface, such as Japanese paper or linen, which pulls finer details off the plate. -Wikipedia
